A gelled battery, also known as a gel battery, is a type of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery. It is designed to be maintenance-free and provides longer service life than a traditional flooded lead-acid battery. It consists of various components, each with unique functions. Below are the components of a gelled battery and their functions.
1. Lead-acid battery: The lead-acid battery is the primary component of a gelled battery. It provides the power storage and energy discharged during use.
2. Separator: The separator between the electrodes prevents the positive and negative plates from touch, reducing the occurrence of short circuits.
3. Electrodes: The electrodes consist of lead dioxide (positive electrode) and sponge lead (negative electrode). These electrodes are responsible for the exchange of ions between the electrolyte and the electrodes.
4. Electrolyte: The electrolyte contains a gel-like substance made of sulfuric acid and silica or other gelling agents which immobilize the electrolyte so that it does not spill if the battery is ruptured.
5. Container: The container houses all the components of the battery and the gel electrolyte. It is made of a durable material that is resistant to corrosion, leaking or cracking.
6. Vent: The vent is present on the cover of the container to allow gases generated during the charging process to escape the battery. It also prevents the buildup of pressure that can damage the cover or container.
